POTSDAM -- The Great Northern Bruins completed a successful first season of fast-pitch softball at the 14U level.

Girls from Potsdam, Canton, Norwood and Moira ages 12 to 15 made up the team. The summer season consisted of 13 games including two tournaments.

The girls got off to a slow start but quickly became competitive placing third in the Lake Placid Invitational.

The team also competed in the Can-Am Shootout held in the Watertown area. The Shootout consisted of 47 teams from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio ages 10 to 19. The 14U division pitted 13 of the best teams in New York and Ohio.

Although the Bruins were out-classed in this tournament they made their coaches and parents proud by competing hard and staying positive.

Members of the Bruins team included Kirstie Bigwarfe, Kaitlin Burke, Sarah Darabon, Bethany Gilbert, Kelsey Green, Bailey Hurlbut, Erica Mason, Victoria Mondragon, Beth Pearson, Emily O’Connor and Lauren Smith.

The girls would like to thank their sponsors who made it possible for them to play: Great Northern Screen Printing and Embroidery, Potsdam BPOE #2074, Paul Petroccione General Contractor, Potsdam Youth Baseball/Softball Association, Sears-Potsdam, Woodruff Block Company Inc. and Pignona’s Sports Exchange.
