First-year student Kyle Plimpton pitched a one-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in her collegiate debut to help the St. Lawrence University softball team split its opening games in Fort Myers, FL on Saturday.

The Saints (1-1), who suffered a 9-1 loss in five innings to SUNY Brockport earlier in the day, rebounded with errorless defense and 11 hits to back up Plimpton in a 9-0 victory over Mount Mary College in five innings. Rookie Aisha O'Connor led the team offensively as she went 4-for-5 on the day with three runs, a double and two RBIs, while sophomore Rebecca Allen was 3-for-5 with two runs.

Against Mount Mary College, St. Lawrence opened the scoring in the first inning when junior Chelsea Cavellier hit a shot up the middle to score O'Connor and give her team a 1-0 advantage. The Saints cracked Mount Mary's pitcher Jessica Kelly in the third inning, scoring seven runs with seven hits to stretch their advantage to 8-0. Plimpton continued to impress on the mound with a solid defense behind her, as she struck out four of the last six batters she faced. Allen doubled to center field in the fourth inning and crossed the plate on a Mount Mary error to bring the game to its final score of 9-0 after five innings.

Earlier in the day against Brockport, the Saints were the first to strike as O'Connor singled on a bunt and then scored on several walks by Eagles pitcher Jean Farrell in the first inning. Though the bases were loaded with only one out, the Saints were unable to plate those runners but still had a 1-0 lead.

After being held scoreless for an inning and a half, Brockport responded with eight runs over the next four innings with the help of untimely St. Lawrence errors. Junior captain Elizabeth McGinley allowed nine hits and two earned runs and was credited with the loss.

St. Lawrence will take on NYU Polytechnic and Salem State tomorrow, March 11th at the Cape Coral Complex.
