Potsdam, N.Y.—Plattsburgh (7-0, 5-0 ECAC West) got three goals in each of the first two periods and downed the SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team by a 7-2 score on Tuesday night. The Cardinals got a four-point night from senior forward Brittany Meade (Saranac Lake, N.Y./Cornwall Typhoons) (2-2-4) as well as two goals from sophomore defenseman Erica Pomponio (New Boston, Mich./Team Illinois). The Bears got power-play goals from junior forwards Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ont./Aurora Panthers) and Caitlin Manahan (St. Albans, Vt./Elmira College).

The Cardinals established themselves quickly. At 5:11 of the first period, Meade took the puck from her own zone, weaved through the Potsdam defense, and fired a shot over Bears freshman goaltender Dawna Savarinas’ (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) left shoulder. Eight minutes later Plattsburgh freshman defenseman Allison Era (Glendale, Ariz./LA Selects U-19) wristed a shot from the right point off the draw that a screened Salvarinas never saw. At the 15:50 mark Meade struck again, scoring from the left side of the net off a rebound, giving Plattsburgh a 3-0 advantage.

Just 34 seconds into the second period, Pomponio (New Boston, Mich./Team Illinois) sent a long pass ahead. The puck was redirected off the skate of a Potsdam defender and eluded the stick of Salvarinas for a 4-0 advantage. At the 9:09 mark, senior forward Steph Moon (Pittburgh, Pa./Ohio Flames) tipped a shot from the point to make it 5-0. Bears sophomore goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) replaced Salvarinas soon after the fifth goal. Eight minutes later, the Bears answered on the power play as Lewis slammed home the rebound off a shot from junior defenseman Stephanie Malcolm (Hamilton, Ontraio/Hamilton Hawks). The Cardinals regained their six-goal lead with 39 seconds left in the period when senior defenseman Kara Buehler (Skaneateles, N.Y./Syracuse Stars) scored from the point.

Pomponio struck again at 11:06 of the third period, solving Conophy from right in front in front of the net. Though Plattsburgh hit two posts and a crossbar in the waning minutes, the Cardinals didn’t score again. Potsdam’s Manahan closed the scoring on the power play with 8:19 remaining; with a goal off the rebound of a shot from freshman forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder). Junior defenseman Breanna Roy (Orleans, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats) also assisted on the marker.

Sophomore goalie Sydney Aveson (West Corvina, Calif./Brampton Thunder) made 16 saves in the win for Plattsburgh. Salvarinas finished with 32 saves in 31:18 for the Bears, while Conophy stopped 17 shots in 28:42. The Cardinals finished 1-6 on the man advantage and Potsdam was 2-3.

Bears Head Coach Jay Green admitted his team started slow against a strong team, but was happier with how the Bears closed out the contest.

“Our biggest problem tonight was that we never decided to play with any intensity until sometime in the second period,” said Green. “If you give a team like Plattsburgh too much time and space and you’re not aggressive and playing tight with those guys, you’re in trouble. All in all I thought we finished strong. We continued to work hard, increase our level of intensity, finished smart and that was the objective.”

Green said the next five games are crucial to picking up lost ground.

“Going into this weekend we have two games we must win. Coming back from the break we have three games we must win,” added Green. “We need to have some momentum from those five games as we move back into conference play.”

Potsdam (1-7, 1-6) hosts St. Michael’s for games on Dec. 10-11. The Bears face the Purple Knights at 4 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
