The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team fell to nationally-ranked No. 19 Skidmore College on Saturday at Hall-Leet Stadium by the score of 16-10 in the Saints' 2011 Liberty League opener.  Junior captain Caldwell Rohrbach had four goals and an assist, while sophomore Tucker Garfield added three tallies and a helper.  Skidmore's Mike Holden finished with a game-high five goals while Ben Cornell (2g,3a) had five points.

Skidmore, which scored five man-up goals, improves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while St. Lawrence falls to 2-5 (0-1).

The Thoroughbreds used a solid 46-33 advantage in shots to earn the victory, though St. Lawrence finished with a 32-31 edge in ground balls.  Skidmore won 16-of-29 face-offs, and had 10:00 minutes worth of man-up time thanks to nine penalties against St. Lawrence.

Sophomore goalie Jack Nuland made 13 stops for the Scarlet and Brown, while classmate James Fuller added three saves in the fourth quarter.  Skidmore's Connor Dowling earned the win with nine saves.

The visitors used a six-goal first quarter to grab the momentum and build a 6-2 advantage after one period.  Sophomore Cody Danforth got St. Lawrence on the board at 4:54 to cut Skidmore's lead to 2-1, but the Thoroughbreds would score three straight, including two from Holden, to extend their lead.  Rohrbach and Holden exchanged goals to close the first quarter and cap the scoring at 6-2.

St. Lawrence would strike back early in the second quarter, as Rohrbach, junior Kyle Jacobsen and Garfield scored three straight to open the frame and get their team back to within one at 6-5 with 9:31 to play in the half.  However, Skidmore showed its resilience, as Cornell, Jon Hoeg and Sam Lawfer came right back to push the lead back to four.  Rohrbach would score with 1:31 left in the half to get St. Lawrence within striking distance, down 9-6 at intermission.

However, Skidmore would seize control of the game in the third, outscoring St. Lawrence 4-1 in the stanza to take a 13-7 advantage into the fourth.  Despite goals from Garfield (2), Rohrbach and sophomore Dave Schoettler, the Saints could not put a run together and fell short, 16-10.

The Saints will be in action again at Hall-Leet Stadium on Wednesday, April 6 against Plattsburgh State at 7:00pm.  The team then hits the road for two consecutive Liberty League contests at Union and Clarkson.
