No. 19 Saints men's lacrosse rallies, falls to No. 2 RIT in league action

Junior Matt Ellis scored his first collegiate goal to bring the No. 19 St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team within one in the third quarter, but second-ranked RIT topped the Saints 11-7 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon in Rochester, New York.

First-year Mark Mahoney and junior Jack Suominen led the Scarlet and Brown with two goals each, while Mike Donnelly recorded a goal and an assist. Ellis and David Jennings also scored for the Saints. Saints' goalkeeper Alex Terry led the Saints with five ground balls, while Patrick Abad and Zachary Ettinghausen each grabbed four ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Ryan Tandy put the Tigers on the board first, as RIT quickly built a 5-1 midway through the second quarter. Mahoney recorded his fifth goal of the year with 23 seconds to play in the half to close the gap to three.

Cam Isaac and Adam Wolf increased the Tigers lead to five with 8:44 to play in the third, but the Saints came back swinging with four unanswered goals in just over the next three minutes, closing the Tigers lead to one.

The Tigers responded with the next four to seal the win and remain undefeated in Liberty League action.

Ryan Barnable led the Tigers with three goals and an assist, while Wolf and Tandy each scored twice. Shawn Nally and Dawson Tait added a goal and two assists, while Trevor Smyth and Isaac also scored for RIT. Matt Poque grabbed a team-high seven ground balls, while Julien Guay and Chandler Allen each caused three turnovers.

Terry recorded nine saves in goal for the Saints, while Walker Hare made 14 saves for RIT.

The Saints outshot RIT 41-39 and edged the Tigers 21-20 in shots on goal. The Tigers picked up 40 ground balls to the Saints' 35.

St. Lawrence fell to 11-3 on the season and 4-3 in conference play, while RIT improved to 15-1 and 7-0.

The Saints will host the 16th-ranked Engineers to close the regular season on Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m.
