The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team suffered a tough 3-2 overtime loss to nationally-ranked No. 10 Harvard on "Senior Day" at Appleton Arena. Jillian Dempsey scored Saturday's game-winner with only 6.3 seconds left in the extra session, giving the Crimson two points in the ECAC Hockey standings.

St. Lawrence falls to 13-16-2 (8-11-0) on the season and lost its third consecutive game by a single goal. Meanwhile, the Crimson improve to 14-8-4 (13-4-3).

"We had just as many opportunities to win as they did," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "The bottom line is we didn't execute and they did. (Jillian) Dempsey is a great talent and I love watching her play."

The two ECAC Hockey rivals played a scoreless first period that was owned by the goaltenders. Graduate student Maxie Weisz made 12 outstanding saves for the home team, including back-to-back stops on Gina McDonald and Kate Buesser. Her counterpart, Laura Bellamy, made seven stops for Harvard.

All of the scoring in regulation came in a back-and-forth second stanza that included two goals in the final seconds. Harvard cracked the scoreboard first on a dazzling power play goal by Liza Ryabkina at 11:23. Ryabkina took a pass from Dempsey, shook a defender and fired a shot under the cross bar for her 11th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

St. Lawrence would respond with a power play goal of its own at 16:31, as senior Lauren Brozowski tallied her fourth goal of the year. Sophomore Kelly Sabatine won a face-off in the Harvard zone back to Jamie Goldsmith at the blue line. Goldsmith sent a shot towards goal that Brozowski re-directed in front through Bellamy's legs to knot the score at 1-1.

The Saints appeared to gather all of the momentum in the final minute of the second period, as Sabatine gave her team a 2-1 cushion with 39.2 seconds left. The Hamilton, ON native took a feed from classmate Brooke Fernandez and beat Bellamy with a wrist shot to give the Scarlet and Brown the lead. Brozowski also earned an assist on the goal.

However, Harvard would need only 26 seconds to respond, as the Crimson evened the scoring at 2-2 with 13.2 seconds left. Josephine Pucci was able to push the puck across the goal line after a scrum piled up in front of Weisz for her eighth goal of the year. Kaitlin Spurling and Elizabeth Parker assisted on the tying goal.

The third period would prove to be an evenly-matched bout, as Harvard held a 7-6 advantage in shots but were unable to beat Weisz. St. Lawrence went on to control much of the overtime period, but a turnover in the defensive zone led to Dempsey's game-winner. As the Saints looked to break out of their zone with less than 12 seconds left in overtime, McDonald knocked the puck away and sent a shot towards the goal. Dempsey cut to the far post, collected a loose puck that Weisz couldn't reel in, and scored her ninth goal of the season to send Harvard back to Cambridge, MA with a victory.

Bellamy finished with 20 saves in the game, while Weisz made 28. The Saints were 1-of-5 on the power play while the Crimson was 1-of-6.

Following the game, the Saints honored the five members of the Class of 2011, including senior assistant captains Kirsten Roach and Karell Emard, Brozowski, Weisz and Nicolien Bongaerts.

St. Lawrence will host North Country rival Clarkson University at Appleton Arena in the team's final regular season home game on Tuesday, February 15. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3:30pm.
