Plattsburgh, NY - Seven unearned runs came at inopportune times as the Clarkson University Baseball team squandered a two-run lead in the opener and saw a modest advantage disappear in the second game in a doubleheader sweep, 3-2 and 7-2, at the hands of Plattsburgh State on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Knights fell to 13-9 overall with their second and third straight losses, while Plattsburgh improved to 12-16. Clarkson looks to get back on track when the team returns home for a four-game Liberty League set against Skidmore College this weekend.
In the opener, sophomore starter Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY) overmatched the Cardinals through three innings in a warm up start prior to this weekend's games and nearly left with a victory. The Knights picked up a pair of runs in the top of the second inning as Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) and Garrett Russell (Lake George, NY) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Senior Justin McInerney (Grand Island, NY) followed with a single for his 15th RBI of the season and Sam Grainger (Bedford, MA) belted a sacrifice fly to give Clarkson a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Cardinals scored three runs, two of them unearned. Plattsburgh loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a fielder's choice that did not result in an out. Then an error allowed a run to come home. A soft grounder went through the left side to tie the score and a bases loaded hit by pitch drove in what proved to be the game-winner. Clarkson's offense went down quietly in the final three innings, unable to deliver a hit in its last nine outs.
The second game started off similarly, with the Knights picking up a run on a sacrifice fly from Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) and an RBI single from Coleman in the third. Clarkson's defense failed in the third inning as five unearned runs crossed in the frame, putting the game out of reach early at 6-2. The Golden Knights' offense sputtered in the final four innings with just a single base hit and only two baserunners.
Coleman was the only player to record more than one hit in the doubleheader as Clarkson had only 11 hits in 14 innings. The Cardinals had just 11 hits in their 12 at bats as well.
