St. Lawrence University's women's basketball team took control of the game midway through the first half and never trailed the rest of the way in a 63-51 win at Elmira College on Saturday, gaining a split of its weekend series.

Senior Casey Capello and sophomore Kelly Legg combined for 24 points to pace the Saints, now 3-2 on the year. Jessica Zoltowski led all scorers with 18 for Elmira, now 0-6.

The Saints jumped out early, taking a 6-0 lead, but the Soaring Eagles battled back to take a 13-12 lead 7:30 into the first half. Katie Murray hit a three pointer to put the Saints back up 15-13 and they never trailed again. Erica Spera scored inside to put the Saints up by six again with 8:03 to play and Maddy Wetterhahn's layup with 18 seconds left gave SLU a 32-26 halftime lead.

Legg's layup 5:38 into the second half gave the Saints their first double-digit lead of the game at 43-32, and while Elmira did cut it to eight, a three pointer by Kara McDuffee and Katie Abramski's layup midway through the second half pushed the Saint lead to 14 at 51-37 and Elmira never seriously threatened the rest of the way. Legg hit six of 16 from the field, had eight rebounds, four blocked shots, two assists and a steal while Capelleo was five for 11 with a pair of assists. Katie Edgerton added eight points, three assists, a steal and a block. The Saints had a 42-38 edge on the boards and shot 41 percent from the field for the game while Elmira shot 31.7 percent.
