POTSDAM, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey (10-8-3, 7-8-3 ECAC West) team defeated Chatham by a final score of 6-0. Five different Bears scored as the senior class ended their home career with a victory and brought the team closer to clinching a spot in the conference tournament.

The Bears dominated most of the first period but had nothing to show on the scoreboard. Potsdam led the Cougars 25-6 shots after the first 20 minutes but Chatham’s goalie Megan Buchanan was up to the task. Each team had a chance to convert a power play opportunity but the Bears went 0-for-2 and the Cougars couldn’t convert on their one opportunity. Potsdam was a little unlucky and twice hit the post in the period.

The Bears finally broke through at 6:35 of the second period when freshman forward Alexandra Holowka tipped in a rebounded shot taken from the point by sophomore assistant captain Brittany Lucky. Potsdam would tack on another goal at the 10:58 mark as freshman Izzy Fayerman beat Buchanan stick side. The Bears would tack on three more goals in the period to take a commanding 5-0 lead into the intermission. The goals were scored by senior Caitlin Manahan, sophomore Jessica Silveira, and senior captain Annmarie Lewis.

The Cougars (0-16, 0-16) were unable to solve Potsdam goalie Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) in the third period and the sophomore finished with 13 saves in the shutout. The Bears killed three power-play opportunities and Manahan added a power-play marker to end the scoring.

Buchanan finished with 63 saves in the losing effort.

Head Coach Jay Green was pleased with the team’s effort and especially his four seniors.

“All four of these girls brought things to the table that were very beneficial to the program and our success and they will all be missed,” said Green. “We’ve lost to some good teams but we are happy with our record with two games remaining.”

Potsdam is currently in fifth place in the ECAC West and has a three point advantage over Neumann. The Bears can clinch a playoff spot with a Plattsburgh St. sweep of Utica this weekend.

Potsdam will finish up the regular season with a trip to Sacred Heart for two nonconference matchups.
