Lake Myrtle, FL - Senior Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) had four hits and accounted for seven runs as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Worcester State, 15-6 and 5-4, Tuesday afternoon at the Lake Myrtle Baseball Complex.

The Golden Knights won their fifth and sixth straight games to improve to 6-1 overall, while the Lancers fell to 2-8. Clarkson will take on Western New England on Wednesday in Winter Haven, FL.

For the second straight game the Knights got a first-inning home run, this time getting a leadoff bomb from senior Jerry Coleman. In the second, Clarkson was able to break things open a bit more with four more runs. Coleman singled in two more runs with two outs and two batters later David Kinney (Mexico, NY) delivered a two-run double as Clarkson hit around. In the fourth, the Knights batted around again, scoring six in the frame. Kinney delivered his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly and Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) singled home another. John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) doubled home a run, and then Pete Lasecki (Stratford, CT) forced in another run with a groundout. With two outs, Clarkson started again as Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY) singled home a run and Matt Jenack (Massena, NY) forced in a run with a bases loaded walk.

Although the Lancers toughed Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY) for a run in the fourth inning, Clarkson continued to produce runs. Jenack and Kinney hit back-to-back sacrifice flies in the sixth and then got two more in the seventh on an Adam Szklany (Windham, ME) single.

Clarkson pounded out 18 hits in the opener, led by Jerry Coleman, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Lenney and Morrissey each went 3-for-5 while Szklany, John Coleman, and Lasecki each had two hits. David Kinney had just one hit in three at bats, but he drove home four runs.

On the mound, Chudy earned his first win of the season via the pre-determined start rule, as the junior righty was held to a shorter pitch count than usual. He allowed four hits and a walk in four innings before being relieved by freshman Matt Ehrets (Johnson City, NY), who finished off the final three innings to give the Knights the victory.

In game two, Clarkson continued to score with a run in the first, but the offense stalled in the middle innings as Worcester State took its first lead of the doubleheader. The Knights picked up a run in the bottom half of the first inning when John Coleman singled home Bobby Derico (Watervliet, NY) who had reached base earlier when he was hit by a pitch. Though the Knights threatened in each of the next two innings, they were unable to score. The Lancers, however, picked up a run in the top of the third inning on a single, balk, sacrifice bunt, and a ground out, and another in the fourth on a double, tag up, and a sacrifice fly.

The Knights responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth when Jerry Coleman singled home a pair of runs. Coleman moved up to second on the throw and then Derico added an infield single to create a first-and-third situation. The rally ended, however, when David Kinney hit a grounder that was booted by the shortstop, but the kick went right to the second baseman, who stepped on the bag and then turned to complete the unlikely double play.

After Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) shut the Lancers down in the top of the fifth, Clarkson tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning. David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) led off the inning with a single and stole second, then was hit home on a single up the middle from John Coleman. The freshman came around on a single from Morrissey to give the Knights a 5-2 edge.

The Lancers picked up a run in the sixth when they opened with a hit by a pitch and a single. Following a sacrifice bunt, a throwing error produced a first-and-third situation with Worcester State scoring on the play. Mattingly was able to pick the runner off first, but a wild pitch drew the Lancers to within one, 5-4.

Clarkson’s offense cooled in the second game as the team produced nine hits, with Wixted and John Coleman each picking up a pair of base knocks. Wixted also stole four bases in game two. The second game was more about pitching for the Knights as Mattingly picked up the win in relief of Evan Young (Ghent, NY), and Kinney pitched a scoreless seventh for the save, with the trio combining to give up just five hits.
