Junior defenseman Mark Borowiecki’s (Kanata, ONT) power play goal 2:06 into the third period snapped a 1-1 tie and would stand as the game-winner, as the Clarkson University Hockey team gained a key ECAC Hockey win on the road, defeating Brown 3-1 at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, RI on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson, which fell at #1-ranked Yale 5-2 on Friday, stands at 12-9-2 overall and moves into sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-4-1 ECAC Hockey mark. The Golden Knights return to Cheel Arena this coming weekend hosting Quinnipiac and Princeton.

The Knights battled back from a 1-0 deficit, receiving goals from three different players to snap a two-game losing skid.

The two teams played a scoreless first period, which saw two separate full two-minute four-on-four segments and two power play chances for the Golden Knights. Clarkson held an 11-9 advantage in shots during the opening frame.

After killing three straight Clarkson power-play chances, Brown (7-8-4, 5-6-1) finally got one of their own, a five-minute opportunity after senior Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) was ejected for contact to the head-elbowing and a game misconduct at 4:17 of the second frame.

Brown needed less than a minute to break the scoreless tie, as Matt Wahl scored at 5:10 to give the home team the opening lead. The Bears still had 4:07 left on the power play, but saw limited opportunities to push the lead to two goals, and just nine seconds after returning to full strength, Clarkson tied the score at 1-1.

Brown got caught running around defensively and freshman Jarrett Burton (Echo Bay, ONT) took the puck from classmate Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA), skated around a Brown defender, and back-handed the puck over Bear goaltender Mike Clemente’s left shoulder at 9:26 for his second goal of the year. Junior Julien Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) also assisted on the goal.

Clarkson went ahead, 2-1, just 2:06 into the third period, converting on its fifth power play chance of the game. Borowiecki was credited with his third goal of the season after his shot from the blueline deflected off a Brown player, popped up in the air and over Clemente, falling behind the Bears’ goalie. Junior Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT) and freshman Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) assisted.

Brown pulled Clemente in favor of the extra attacker with 1:32 remaining and the Golden Knights secured the win with 50 seconds left when junior Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) took a pass from classmate Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) and walked it into the open net for the 3-1 final. Freshman defenseman Alex Boak (Norwood, NY) also assisted.

Clarkson outshot the Bears 37-31. Junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) posted 30 saves. The Knights went 1-of-5 on the power play, while Brown was 1-of-3 with the man-advantage.
