With a home-and-home weekend series in non-conference action against its archrival, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team will look to generate momentum and gain some confidence as the 2010-11 campaign begins to hit full stride. Clarkson hosts St. Lawrence University on Friday in a 3:30 p.m. faceoff at Cheel Arena and then travels down Route 11 on Saturday afternoon to take on the Saints at Appleton Arena in Canton, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Saturday's game at St. Lawrence will be broadcast on the radio and over the internet by WQTK 92.7 FM.

Goals have been hard to come by for a young Golden Knight squad during the opening portion of the season. Guided by the head coaching of husband-and-wife tandem Matt and Shannon Desrosiers, now in their third-year at the Clarkson helm, and assistant coach Matt Kelly, the Green and Gold have put in some good efforts through the first four games, but have not yet been rewarded for their hard work. Clarkson is 0-4 overall and has been shut out three times.

This past weekend, the Knights traveled to New England to battle Hockey East foes the University of Connecticut and Providence College. On Saturday, Clarkson fell to UConn 3-1 as the Huskies capitalized on the power play, going 2-of-3 with the man-advantage. The Knights came out in full force on Sunday at Providence, out shooting the Friars 14-2 over the opening 20 minutes, but could not find the back of the net in a scoreless first period. Providence struck four times in the middle frame en route to a 5-0 win, despite being outshot 35-18 for the contest.

Clarkson opened the season on October 1-2 with a rematch against last year’s NCAA Tournament foe, Minnesota at Cheel. The fourth-ranked Gophers posted 5-0 and 3-0 wins.

The Knights return 14 letterwinners from last year’s squad which posted a 23-12-4 overall record and a second-place 14-5-3 ECAC Hockey mark. Senior defenseman Courtney Olson (Brunswick, GA) leads the Green and Gold as team captain, while seniors Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) and Caitlin Oleksa (Battle Creek, MI) and juniors Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK) and Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) will serve as alternate captains.

Junior Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE), with a goal, and freshman Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT), with an assist, are the only two Golden Knights with points through the first four games.

Senior Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) has started all four games in the Clarkson goals and posts a .899 save percentage and a 3.74 goals against average. Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) has played parts of two games and holds a .833 save percentage and a 3.85 GAA through 47 minutes of action.

St. Lawrence opened its season this past weekend gaining a split against Providence and UConn. The Saints edged the Huskies 3-2 on Sunday after falling to Providence 6-1 on Saturday. Kelly Sabatine leads the Saints in scoring with one goal and one assist. Freshman Caitlyn Lahonen picked up the win in the St. Lawrence goal behind a 12-save outing. Maxie Weisz took the loss against the Friars, making 21 stops on 25 shots.
St. Lawrence leads the series 5-12-3, but the Knights won three of five meetings last year and knocked the Saints out of the ECAC playoffs by winning the ECAC quarterfinal series at Cheel Arena 2-1 on February 26-28 (5-0, 1-2, 4-1).
