POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (7-16, 4-12 SUNYAC) got 26 points from sophomore guard Phoebe Byrnes, including three three-pointers in the closing minutes, to edge the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-21, 0-15) 62-57 on Saturday afternoon.

Senior guard Katy Briedis led the Bears with 18 points and junior forward Jessica Kouzan added 10 points and five rebounds.

Neither team led by more than four in a tightly contested first half. A layup from senior forward Adedoyin Akingba gave Potsdam a 10-6 lead at the 14:51 mark.

After the Golden Eagles had caught up, sophomore guard Carli Reynolds buried a three-pointer for 19-15 Bears advantage. Brockport's Byrnes connected for a layup at 7:27 to cap a 5-0 run that tied the score. The teams traded baskets over the last seven minutes of the half.

Sophomore forward Cecillia Sigrist hit a layup with 3:25 on the clock to give the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the half at 28-24. Reynolds immediately answered with a three to close the gap to just one. Sigrist finished the opening period with a jumper to give Brockport a 30-27 lead at the break.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a three from Byrnes, but Potsdam answered with an 8-2 run to grab a 36-35 lead capped with a Kouzan jumper at 16:57. Matching buckets marked the next 10 minutes, before a three from junior guard Alexandra Marshall extended Brockport's lead to 48-43.

Again Potsdam battled back to tie the game at 52-52 with a three-pointer from junior guard Chenice Russell and then pushed ahead 54-52 lead with another basket from Russell. Each time Potsdam made a push, Byrnes answered with a three-pointer to stifle the Bears momentum. The last Byrnes bomb came with 44 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a 61-57 lead. Brockport chipped in one more from the free-throw line to cement the 62-57 victory.

Marshall finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while junior forward Hannalee Fordyce also nearly missed a double-double with eight points and 10 boards. Reynolds had nine points on the day for the Bears and sophomore forward Margaret Wall had six points and nine rebounds.

Potsdam shot 38.8 percent from the floor, while Brockport hit 42.3 percent of their shots. The Golden Eagles were 7-18 from three-point range and the Bears were 7-22.

Potsdam hits the road for Plattsburgh on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
