St. Lawrence University sophomore Jeff Goeke turned in a brilliant 17-save performance while junior Peter Carpenter scored three goals including a highlight-reel tally, lifting the Saints men's lacrosse team to an 8-4 win over Colby College at Hall-Leet Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory is the first for St. Lawrence in 2011, as the team improves to 1-3 heading into the Nazareth game on Saturday, March 26.  The loss moves the Mules to 2-2 on the season.

Colby finished with a 39-22 advantage in shots and a 30-23 edge in ground balls.  The visitors, who also won 12-of-16 face-offs and had the only three man-up chances on the game, never led in the game as Goeke was outstanding between the pipes from the start.

Carpenter scored the game's first goal for St. Lawrence only 1:00 minute into regulation, and though Ian Deveau tied the score at 1-1 for the Mules, junior Drake Paul gave the Scarlet and Brown a 2-1 advantage after one quarter.  Junior captain Caldwell Rohrbach scored his first goal of the game for a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter, while John Jennings would cap the first half scoring with Colby trailing 3-2.

Goeke had seven saves in the first half, while his counterpart, Peter Reiley, made three stops.

The Saints seized control of the contest in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents 3-0 while Goeke made six more stops.  Carpenter made it 4-2, while sophomore Mac Johnson pushed the lead to 5-2 with 4:37 left in the quarter.  Junior Matt Pope then took a pass from sophomore Dave Hovey and laced a shot past Reiley with 4.2 seconds remaining in the third to cap the scoring and push St. Lawrence's lead to 6-2.

Deveau would get Colby back to within three at 6-3 only 50 seconds into the fourth quarter.  However, Rohrbach's unassisted goal at 4:36 made it 7-3 before Carpeter put the game away with 3:47 to go.  The Windsor, CT native took a pass from Pope in front of Reiley and fired the ball past the goalie with a behind-the-back shot.  The goal gave St. Lawrence a five goal cushion, and though Jennings scored a man-up goal with 1:11 to go, the Scarlet and Brown captured an 8-4 victory.

Goeke's efforts in net were matched by his defensive unit, as sophomores Brian Wilber and Jake Wynn were solid alongside first-year student Sam Marvin and senior Chris Palmer.

St. Lawrence will look to build some momentum on Saturday against the Golden Flyers at 2:00pm in Carthage, NY.
