Potsdam, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia scored a late second half goal to defeat the SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team 1-0 in the driving rain and wind.

Freshman forward Taylor Wingerden (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) scored the game-winner for the Blue Devils (8-6, 3-3 SUNYAC) in the 77th minute.

The Bears wore pink jerseys support the American Cancer Society and for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The inclement weather made things difficult for both teams and helped to limit ball movement and offensive opportunities. Potsdam outshot Fredonia 4-1 in the first half, but wasn’t able jump out in front.

In the second half with the wind at its back, Fredonia turned up the pressure. Early on Bears’ sophomore goalie Caitlin Titus (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made several big saves to keep the contest scoreless. As the half progressed the Blue Devils got closer, just heading a ball over the net and clanging a shot off a Potsdam goal post. At the 76:52 mark, Fredonia finally broke through. Senior forward Julie LaPolla (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) had her shot blocked by a Potsdam defender. The ball then bounced over to Wingerden, who buried the decisive goal. The Bears were able to open up the game as time ran down, but were unable to find the equalizer.

Titus finished with six saves for Potsdam, while freshman Blue Devils goalie Kayleigh Forger (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) stopped one shot for the win.

Bears Head Coach Tim Moody admitted being a bit frustrated with the outcome, but was happy with his team’s effort.

“This was a game we should have won, could have won, but we just didn’t get the break we needed,” said Moody. “We played well and battled for every loose ball. Overall, it was a very good team performance in awful conditions.”

Moody admitted the weather affected the game plan, but the Bears got good results in the first half.

“It was difficult to play, so we kept it simple and caused them some real problems in the first half,” Moody added. “We got plenty of chances and tested them. I think if we had scored in the first half, I think that would have been enough to win, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.”

The Bears coach was also happy his team was able to support breast cancer awareness.

“The jerseys were different and we got everyone’s attention so we feel we succeeded in our goal to raise awareness and we’ll be wearing them again tomorrow.”

Potsdam (9-7, 1-6), again clad in pink, will host the Buffalo State

Bengals tomorrow at 1 p.m. to cap the weekend.
