Rochester, N.Y. - The SUNY Canton men's ice hockey team opened their 2010-11 season in commanding fashion as they rolled over Rochester Institute of Technology 7-3 Friday night in Rochester.
Sophomore Adam Fedor (Orleans, Ontario), who led the team in scoring last year, and freshman Chris Schmidbauer (San Diego, Calif.) each had three points and Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) stopped 31 of 34 shots for the Roos (1-0 ECHL, 1-0 overall).
Fedor scored twice and had one assist and Schmidbauer had one goal and two assists.
SUNY Canton fired 59 shots at the Tigers and the Roos have now won the last three matchups between the two schools.
Corey Spuck (Rochester, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist. John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.), Doug Burns (Manchester, N.H.) and Chris Giczewski (Fountain Valley, Calif.) each scored once and Corey Frizell (Orleans, Ontario) contributed two assists.
Brian Kugler scored two goals to lead RIT and Andrew Miller had 52 saves.
The Roos will play at Rochester tonight at 7:30 and then host Binghamton University in their home opener on Sunday at 3:30 at the Canton Pavilion.
