Evans & Knapp homer, Beane earns first win as Roos softball closes out Florida trip with split

Naples, FL – Alicia Evans and Jordan Knapp hit their first home runs of the season and Alaina Beane earned her first victory of the year as the SUNY Canton softball team split another pair of one-run games on Friday to close out play at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida.

THE BASICS

Records: SUNY Canton (3-7) | Western CT St. (7-3) | Curry (5-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

Valerie Clark and Alicia Evans each recorded three hits, while Sophia Harris, Kayla Chavarri, Jordan Knapp, Brittany, Miner and McKenzie Mattison all had two hits apiece. Knapp led the way with a grand slam in the sixth inning, which gave the Roos a 9-7 lead at the time.

Western Connecticut State scored four in the bottom of the first but Canton answer with four in the top of the second as they batted around the lineup. Mattison, Clark and Harris produced RBI singles, while Jaedyn Ossont walked in a run.

Miner added an RBI single scoring Evans to give the Roos a 5-4 lead in the top of the third but Western Connecticut answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Knapp's grand slam in the sixth gave the team a two-run cushion and Chavarri singled home Harris for a 10-7 lead in the top half of the seventh.

The Colonials responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame for a walk-off victory.

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE

Evans hit a two-run homer and doubled, while Clark went 3-for-4 and drove in a run as the Roos earned a win in their final contest of their spring break trip. Shaylyn DeVito also went 2-for-2 scoring once and Chavarri drove in the Roos other run on an RBI double.

Alaina Beane earned her first collegiate win tossing a complete game giving up just one earned run on five hits with two strike outs.

The Roos scored the first five runs of the game with one in the third and two each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Curry tallied three runs in the fifth and a solo shot to lead off the seventh got the Colonels within one. Canton sealed the win as Curry lined into a double play with no out and Beane got a batter to struck out to close the victory.

The Roos are off until March 24th when they visit Wells College for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
