The St. Lawrence University men's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a six-goal run in the third quarter by Rensselaer in Troy, NY on Saturday. The Engineers used the offensive effort to defeat the Saints by the score of 12-7 and knock the Scarlet and Brown out of contention for the 2011 Liberty League Tournament.
The victory moves RPI to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Meanwhile, St. Lawrence falls to 4-9 (0-5) and will wrap up its 2011 season at home next Saturday, April 30, against Hamilton College at 1:00pm.
Nick Billy finished with a game-high three goals for the Engineers, while both Conor Chocheles and Andrew Liptak added two each. Sophomore Tucker Garfield and junior captain Caldwell Rohrbach each scored a pair of goals for the Saints.
Rensselaer used a 34-27 advantage in shots, including a 14-7 mark in the third quarter, to earn the victory. The Engineers also had a narrow 35-30 lead in ground balls while each team won 11-of-22 face-offs. Both goaltenders, St. Lawrence's Jack Nuland and RPI's James Manchester, finished with nine saves each.
The two teams battled throughout the first half, with Rensselaer heading to intermission with a narrow 3-2 lead. First-year student Pierson Fowler put St. Lawrence on top, 1-0, at 4:29 of the first quarter, but a pair of goals for the home team gave RPI a 2-1 advantage after 15:00 minutes of action.
Rohrbach would level the scoring at 2-2 at 7:53 of the second quarter, with an assist going to sophomore Justin Ingram. However, Liptak followed with an unassisted goal with 3:40 left in the half to give the Engineers the one-goal lead at halftime.
St. Lawrence again tied the score at 3-3 when Garfield picked up his first goal of the game at 3:38 of the third quarter. However, the visitors couldn't retain the momentum as RPI rattled off six straight goals including five in a span of 5:10 to take control of the contest. Andrew Miller and Brett Overend put RPI up 5-3 before Billy scored three straight times to push the advantage to 8-3. Liptak capped the third quarter scoring with 21 seconds to go for a 9-3 cushion.
Despite St. Lawrence outscoring Rensselaer 4-3 in the fourth quarter, the Saints couldn't cut into the home team's big lead. Juniors Kyle Jacobson and Peter Carpenter each scored a goal in the fourth quarter for the Saints along with both Garfield and Rorhbach. St. Lawrence got back to within three at 10-7 with 7:21 remaining, but the Engineers scored the game's final two goals for the 12-7 victory.
