Defense lifts Saints to 73-42 win against Bears

Balanced scoring and a strong defensive effort powered the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team to a 73-42 non-conference victory over Potsdam State on Tuesday night in the Burkman gymnasium.

The win snaps a three-game losing skid for the Saints, who move to 6-7 overall with a 2-3 mark in the Liberty League. Senior Terry Parham led the home team with 14 points, four assists and five steals, while classmate Ralph Temgoua recorded 13 points, 8 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Nine Saints put points on the board in the balanced scoring effort. Potsdam, led by Brad Drysdale's nine points, falls to 4-10 on the season (2-5 SUNYAC).

Temgoua and Parham sparked the Saints to open the game with a 17-4 run, and the team held a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Saints, who led 37-21 into the lock rooms, shot 50.0% from the floor (14-of-28) and the 3-point line (5-for-10) for the half. Temgoua had 11 points in the first stanza, including three 3-pointers, while Parham had nine points.

Potsdam cut the deficit down to 12 at 17:13 on a layup by Josh Lambert, but that was the closest the visitors would come as St. Lawrence never looked back and dominated every facet of the game. Parham was made a circus layup while being fouled and converted the free throw at 15:51 to spark his team to a 20-6 run over the next 12:00, stretching its advantage to 36 points on a layup by first-year student Brady Condlin with 3:19 to play before closing at the 73-42 victory.

The Saints, who owned a 39-27 advantage on the boards and forced 16 turnovers, finished the game shooting 49.1% from the floor on 27-for-55 shooting. A strong defensive effort held the Bears to 32.6% shooting and an 0-for-12 mark from the behind the three point line.

St. Lawrence will look to carry momentum into the Liberty League matchups on the weekend. The Saints will take on RPI on Friday night at 8:00pm before battling Union on Saturday at 4:00pm.
