Cornell rallies to edge Saints 4-3 in overtime

Cornell tied the game on an extra attacker goal with 14.8 seconds to play in regulation time and won it on a power play goal 2:38 into overtime edging St. Lawrence 4-3 in a Lynah Rink heartbreaker for the Saints.

Cornell dominated early, but the Saints scored a power play goal late in the second period, took a 2-1 lead on a five-on-three power play early in the third period and went up 3-1 on Aaron Bogosian's steal and unassisted goal at 8:15, before Cornell battled back.

Cornell cut the Saint lead to 3-2 at 12:03 of the third when Braden Birch put one past Saint goalie Robby Moss and then tied it with goalie Andy Iles out for an extra attacker as Joe Devin scored his second of the night on a redirection of a shot from the center slot by his brother Mike at 19:45.

The Big Red won it, improving to 7-1-2 in the month of January, when Greg Miller's shot from the right point on an overtime power play slipped just under the crossbar at 2:38 to end it

Cornell improves to 11-9-3 overall and 9-5-2 in the ECAC while the Saints are 8-14-5, 4-10-1 after two solid performances on the weekend.

"It's a tough pill to swallow," said Saint associate head coach Bob Prier. "We made it through their pressure early and played them fairly even after that. They are a very good team and they found a way to win it despite being down a pair of goals in the third period. I have nothing but good things to say about the way we played this weekend...it would have been great to come out with a win or tie, but we can certainly build off the weekend effort."

Cornell swarmed the Saints early in a fast-paced first period and the early pressure produced the game's first goal. Senior Joe Devin was all alone at the right post and stuffed a shot past Moss at 5:29 as Greg Miller made the pass from behind the net to start the scoring play.

While the Big Red outshot the Saints 8-1 in the first eight minutes of the game and had the game's first power play when Nick Vangog was called for kneeing at 8:36, the Saint penalty kill was outstanding and seemed to energize the Saints. SLU played the Big Red even the rest of the period and had some excellent scoring chances, although they were outshot 13-4 in the period.

Moss continued his outstanding play in goal in the second period, stopping Jordan Kary all alone in front with 13:03 to play and then making another one-on-one save on Joe Devin with 7:11 left. The Saints then went on a five minute power play when Bobby Torney was run from behind into the boards and cashed in to tie the game at 18:09. Justin Baker's initial shot was kicked out by Cornell goalie Andy Iles, but Nick Pitsikoulis tipped the rebound to Kyle Flanagan, who skated behind the net and scored on the backhand on a wraparound to tie it with his tenth of the year.

Flanagan then set up Greg Carey's 15th of the season on a five-on-three 1:54 into the third period as Carey came down the slot and snapped a shot between Iles and the post, and Bogosian gave the Saints their two goal lead when he stole the puck from a Cornell player between the faceoff dotes and put his 10th of the year past Iles at 8:15.
