Mark Borowiecki, last year’s captain for the Clarkson University Hockey team, was called up today from the minor league to join the National Hockey League’s Ottawa Senators. An Ottawa native, Borowiecki, 22, has scored three goals and 12 assists while adding 76 penalty minutes in 42 games for the American Hockey League’s Binghamton Senators during his first full professional season.

A standout defenseman, Borowiecki left Clarkson at the conclusion of his junior campaign in 2010-11 and joined Binghamton for nine regular season games last season. He also played in 21 playoff games during the B-Sens run to the 2011 Calder Cup championship.

Borowiecki, the first Ottawa native ever drafted by the Senators, was selected with Ottawa’s fifth-round pick (139th overall) in the 2008 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He played in 99 games for the Golden Knights recording 32 points on 12 goals and 20 assists from 2008-11.

Ottawa returns to action this evening when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 p.m.

Borowiecki becomes the seventh former Golden Knight to enter the NHL this season, joining Grant Clitsome (Columbus), Erik Cole (Montreal), Kent Huskins (St. Louis), Randy Jones (Winnipeg), Willie Mitchell (Los Angeles) and Steve Zalewski (New Jersey).
