Clarkson women's lacrosse takes a split in southern trip

The Clarkson University Women’s Lacrosse team earned a split during its southern trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina, defeating Ramapo 14-7 on Monday before falling to Eastern Connecticut State 14-12 on Wednesday.

The Golden Knights, who stand at 1-2 overall, return north playing at Utica College on Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. contest.

Against Eastern Connecticut (5-3), the Knights held an 8-7 lead at the half, but where outscored by the Warriors 7-4 over the final 30 minutes.

The Knights scored four consecutive goals late in the game to make it 12-12, but after killing off a two-minute Clarkson advantage, Eastern took the lead for good, 13-12, with 2:13 left. The Warriors scored an insurance goal with 30 seconds left to seal the win.

Junior Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY) led Clarkson against Eastern Connecticut with five goals, while sophomore Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY) tallied four goals and one assist. Senior Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) chipped in two goals and an assist, while junior Kerrie Cline (Tuxedo, NY) also scored for the Green and Gold.

VanDeValk and Campbell each picked up a team-high four ground balls.

Senior Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made 13 saves against the Warriors.

Clarkson picked up its first victory of the 2012 campaign on Monday by doubling up Ramapo (1-3). The Knights dominated the Roadrunners in the opening 30 minutes, taking a 7-1 lead at the half.

VanDeValk led the way for Clarkson with a six-point effort on four goals and two assists. Cristaldi chipped in three goals and one assist. Freshman Danielle Faivus (Oswego, NY) notched her first collegiate goals with two scores in the second half. Cline and Campbell also scored, along with sophomore Marissa Mastronardi (Cortland, NY) and freshmen Cassie Grace (Potsdam, NY) and Taryn Dausman (Syracuse, NY).

Walters posted 10 saves.
