The Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team’s bid to remain unbeaten against archrival St. Lawrence for the regular season fell just short as the Saints pulled out a 2-1 victory in overtime at Appleton Arena in Canton on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who stand at 11-15-6 overall, hold down sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with an 8-8-4 league mark. Clarkson closes out the regular season playing at Rensselaer and Union this weekend in NY’s Capital District region. The Green and Gold, who finished the season 2-1-1 against St. Lawrence, are four points out of fourth place, the final home-ice spot for the upcoming playoffs.

Playing in their 12th overtime game of the season, the Knights had a chance to end it early in the extra session against the Saints, but could not capitalize on 66 seconds of power-play time in the five-minute period. Fighting to remain in the playoff picture, St. Lawrence (14-16-2, 9-11-0) came through with the game-winner at 2:38 of overtime when Vanessa Emond knocked in a rebound in front.

After a scoreless first period, the Saints took a 1-0 lead early in the middle frame with a goal by Kelly Sabatine at 6:24.

Clarkson came back to tie it at 6:26 of the third on a shot from the point by sophomore defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) that found its way through traffic in front for her fourth goal of the year. Junior Danielle Boudreau (Whitby, ONT) and senior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) assisted.

St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 37-31. Freshman Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) posted 35 saves for the Knights, including 27 over the opening 40 minutes.

Both teams were 0-of-3 on the power play.
