Junior Brittany Mulligan (London, ONT) scored two goals and freshman goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) made 27 saves as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team ran its unbeaten streak over archrival St. Lawrence University to four games (3-0-1) with a 4-1 victory in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena on Tuesday night.

Winners of four of their last five games, the Golden Knights improve their record to 5-7-1 overall and remain perfect in league play with a 3-0-0 ECAC Hockey mark. Clarkson plays at Brown and Yale this Friday and Saturday.

St. Lawrence (4-6-2, 1-2-0) opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Bailey Habscheid at 13:22, but the Knights came right back to tie with a shorthanded tally just over two minutes later. Mulligan picked up a loose puck at center ice and skated into the St. Lawrence zone where she fired a shot from the bottom of the circles past Saints’ goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen at 15:39 for her first goal of the season and Clarkson’s first shorthanded goal of the year.

Both teams had excellent opportunities to take the lead in the middle frame with several breakaway chances on each side. The Knights finally grabbed the lead at 12:45 when senior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) gathered in a deflected puck off of junior Gabrielle Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) and lifted in her fourth goal of the year and 56th career marker to give the Green and Gold a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes. Sophomore defenseman Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) also assisted.

The Knights sealed their second win of the season over their North Country neighbor with two third-period tallies. Mulligan collected her second goal of the night at 4:56, finishing off a pass from Waldie at the top of the crease.

St. Lawrence went on its fifth power-play of the game with 3:41 remaining, and pulled Lahonen for another skater giving the visitors a 6-on-4 man-advantage. Clarkson, however, was able to withstand the Saints’ pressure and recorded its second shorthanded marker of the contest when junior Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK) scored into the empty net at 17:26.

St. Lawrence out shot Clarkson 28-24, but Howe, making her third career start, was on top of her game and finished with 14 stops in the third period. Lahonen made 20 saves on 23 shots for the Saints. St. Lawrence went 1-of-5 on the power play while the Knights were 0-of-4 with the man-advantage.
