Clarkson women continue strong alpine season, men slightly off track

FABIUS -- Junior Jill Clevenger (LaGrangeville, NY) and freshman Christian Perryman (West Lebanon, NH) each won individual races as the Clarkson University Alpine Ski team performed well at the deep West Point Invitational held at Toggenburg Mountain.

The Golden Knights' women placed first among 15 teams in both the giant slalom and slalom in a crossover event between the two divisions in New York, while the men came in first among 17 teams in the giant slalom before faltering to fifth in the slalom.

On Saturday, Sophie LeBlanc (Cumberland, ME) was the top Clarkson performer, finishing in second place in the giant slalom in 1:25.90. Clarkson's depth made them easy winners as Clevenger came in fourth in 1:26.36 and freshman Emilie Garand (Yarmouth, ME) took sixth in 1:27.70. Senior Meghan Cleason (Canandaigua, NY) placed eight in 1:28.62 and freshman Sarah Shafer (Petoskey, MI) finished 24th.

The men were equally dominating as three skiers finished in the top six. Perryman won the giant slalom event in 1:22.56 and classmate Matt Bonner (Killington, VT) was third in 1:23.09. Sophomore David Simon (Montvale, NJ) placed sixth in 1:23.81 as the Knights finished first among 17 teams.

Sunday's slalom wasn't as kind to the Knights as both Perryman and junior John Bennett (Queensbury, NY) each had troublesome runs that pushed their respective times down the chart. Bonner came in fifth in the slalom in 1:19.50 and junior William O'Connor (Mahopac, NY) was 10th in 1:20.48, but their times weren't enough to keep the Knights from dropping to fifth.

The women were more fortunate, placing three in the top four spots. Clevenger won in 1:22.61, and Cleason followed in second place in 1:27.54. Garand came in fourth in 1:29.90 to round out the scoring trio for the Knights. LeBlanc ended up in 12th place.
