Clarkson men's hockey knocks off Yale to complete 4-point road weekend

Clarkson overcame a slow start with a timely first-period goal, a power-play marker and a dominant final twenty minutes to finish off a four-point ECAC Hockey weekend on the road by downing Yale 4-1 at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT on Saturday night.

Ranked 8/9th in the national polls, the Golden Knights, who defeated Brown 2-1 in overtime last night in Providence, have won seven of their last eight games. Clarkson takes a 10-3-1 overall record and a 5-1 ECAC Hockey mark into the Thanksgiving Holiday break. The Green and Gold return to action on December 7 when they host St. Lawrence in conference play at Cheel Arena.

Junior center Zach Tsekos (Montreal, QUE) led the way against Yale (2-6, 2-6) with two goals and one assist. Clarkson's Captain, graduate student, Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) and junior defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) both tallied once. Senior Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) recorded two assists.

The Knights outshot Yale 35-28. Frank Marotte, Clarkson's graduate transfer in net, made 27 saves for his nation-leading 10th win of the season.

Both teams had five power plays with Clarkson connecting once on the man-advantage.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring early when Chandler Lindstrand one-timed a pass past Marotte at 3:16 of the first period with the goaltender pulled due to a delayed penalty against the Knights.

That lead didn't last long as Brosseau wristed home a pass from sophomore defenseman Brian Hurley (Dellwood, MN) at 6:34. The score was the 6th of the campaign for Brosseau. Egle picked up the secondary assist.

Clarkson's highly-rated penalty kill was a factor in the open twenty minutes as the Green and Gold killed off three Eli power plays.

Shots at the end of one period of play were Yale 15, Clarkson 10.

As much as penalty killing was a factor in the first period, the power play got things going in the second stanza.

After a holding call to Yale, Clarkson was able to set up in the offensive zone and got the puck going around the perimeter. McCarthy positioned himself at the top of the left circle and one-timed a pass from Egle past the Yale goalie, Nicholas McNabb. The goal was McCarthy's second of the season – both coming on the power play.

Another power play would produce some good scoring chances, but McNabb made a couple of strong saves to keep the tally 2-1 in favor of the Green and Gold at the second intermission.

The third fame belonged to Clarkson from the opening puck drop. Multiple scoring chances on the first shift led to momentum that culminated in a Clarkson goal.

Sophomore Anthony Callin (Middleton, WI) drove the right wing and put a shot on net from the circle. Tsekos went hard to the net and the rebound of Callin's shot hit Tsekos and rolled past McNabb. The goal stood after video review. Junior Jack Jacome (Caledon, ONT) picked up the secondary assist.

Clarkson was not able to take advantage of a five minute major to the Bulldogs and Yale pressed to try and come back – pulling McNabb with less than four minutes left.
