Junior defenseman Connor McCarthy (LaSalle, QUE) highlighted a big night on the power play by Clarkson as the Golden Knights defeated archrival St. Lawrence for the third time this season at Cheel Arena winning 3-1 in ECAC Hockey action before 3,158 North Country fans on Saturday.
Ranked fifth in the nation, Clarkson improves to 11-3-1 overall and to 6-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Knights close out first semester play at Michigan Tech next weekend.
Clarkson nearly doubled up St. Lawrence (3-12-2, 1-6) in shots, 41-25, but needed a productive effort from its power play to get by the Saints.
McCarthy led the way with his first career two-goal game, with a pair of power-play tallies, and added one assist from the blueline. Senior Haralds Egle (Liepaja, Latvia) connected on the man-advantage for the game-winner and set up both of McCarthy's scores.
Clarkson finished 3-of-6 on the man-advantage and killed off six of the Saints' seven power-play opportunities.
McCarthy opened the scoring with a power-play blast from the left circle at 12:08 for the only scoring in the first period.
St. Lawrence, which lost a pair of overtime games (4-3, 3-2) to the Green and Gold in early November, tallied on the power play at 13:26 of the middle frame with Jake Stevens finding the back of the net. Just 37 seconds later, however, the Knights went back on top.
Eagle took a pass from junior Zach Tsekos (Montreal, QUE) at center ice skated down the slot and fired in a wrist shot at 14:03 for his fifth goal of the season, giving the Knights a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.
McCarthy, who has tallied on the power play for all four of his goals this season, gave the Green and Gold a two-goal cushion when he one-time a pass at the left circle from Egle at 11:02 of the third for a 3-1 lead. Clarkson captain Devin Brosseau (St. Lambert, QUE) recorded his second assist of the night.
Frank Marotte, Clarkson's graduate transfer in net, posted 24 saves. Marotte, who has played every minute in the crease for the Golden Knights, is tied for third in the country in wins with 11.
