With a dominating effort the Clarkson University Men’s Lacrosse team opened the home portion of the 2012 campaign with an impressive performance as the Golden Knights soundly defeated Norwich University 14-2 at Hantz Turf Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior Eric Gollands (Chelmsford, MA) and junior Brendon Shearin (Goffstown, NH) led the balanced offensive outing with three goals apiece. Junior Ryan Cole (Orchard Park, NY) was solid in the Clarkson net with five saves on six shots through three quarters of action to pick up the win.
The Knights held an overwhelming advantage in shots, with a 50-14 margin, and controlled ground balls 36-16 en route to a 2-0 record to start the season.
Clarkson outshot Norwich 13-1 in the opening 15 minutes, but only held a 1-0 lead on freshman Corey Herrington’s (Camillus, NY) team-high sixth goal of the season. The Knights took control on the scoreboard in the second, outscoring the Cadets 4-1 to take a 5-1 lead into the half.
The Knights broke the game open in the third quarter with seven unanswered goals to hold a 12-1 lead through 45 minutes. Clarkson closed out the game with two more scores in the final quarter.
Eleven different Knights found their way on the score sheet. Senior Bryan Huff (Hillsborough, NJ) and junior Matt McCabe (Syracuse, NY) added two goals apiece. Herrington finished with three points, including two assists.
Senior Matt Cyr (Cheshire, CT), sophomore James Wright (Lawrenceville, NY) and freshman Dylan Hrebenach (Saratoga Springs, NY) also scored their first goals of the season in the win. Junior Kyle Kasprzyk (Orchard Park, NY) and freshman Matthew Gold (Pittsford, NY) posted two assists each.
Josh Menge and Seth Fuller scored for Norwich (0-2).
Junior Pat Briggs (Baldwinsville, NY) saw 10:15 of action in the fourth quarter, making three saves on four shots in the Clarkson goal. Freshman Harrison Washuta (Maple Grove, MN) played the final 4:45 in the Knights’ net and turned aside the only shot he faced.
Sophomore Jack Keenan (Brasher Falls, NY) picked up a game-high five groundballs and dominated on face-offs, winning 10-15.
The Knights take to the road for four straight games, beginning with Saturday’s 2:00 p.m. game against Brockport State to be played at Spencerport H.S. near Rochester.
