Trailing 2-0 late in the second period and down a goal with less than one minute remaining in regulation, the Clarkson University Hockey team battled back to earn a 3-3 overtime tie on the road against Canisius College at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who skated to their second consecutive draw, will look to gain their first win of the season when they face off against the Golden Griffins on Sunday in another 3:00 p.m. start in Buffalo. Clarkson owns a 0-4-2 overall record while Canisius is 1-4-2 on the year.

Sophomore Patrick Marsh (Oakville, ONT) had a hand in all three Clarkson goals with one score and two assists. Freshman Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) collected his team-high fourth goal of the year and junior captain Ben Sexton (Kanata, ONT) tallied his second goal of the season with 28.7 seconds left in the third to highlight the Knights’ offensive showing.

Making his first collegiate start in NCAA play, freshman Andrew Hunt (Surrey, BC) was solid in the Clarkson net with a 26-save effort. The Green and Gold out shot Canisius 33-29. Both teams were 1-of-6 on the power play.

The Golden Griffins took advantage off a break in the first period to take 1-0 lead. A wide shot by Canisius deflected off a body in the Clarkson zone and went on net where Tyler Wiseman completed the play with a power-play tally at 15:33. Canisius made it 2-0 early in the middle frame, when Preston Shupe forced a turnover in the Clarkson end and set up a goal in front by Mitch McCrank at 4:39.

The Knights found themselves in a 5-on-3 penalty situation late in the stanza, but after a successful kill Clarkson built on its momentum and scored its first goal of the game. Marsh finished off a pass from junior Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) for his first goal of the season, at 18:03. Junior defenseman Alex Boak (Norwood, NY) also assisted.

Clarkson’s leading goal scorer, Megannety tied the game at 2-2, knocking in a rebound while on the power play at 13:04 of the third. Marsh and freshman Christian Finch (Claremont, ONT) assisted.

With less than a minute remaining in the third the Golden Griffins appeared to have scored the winning goal when Tyler Wiseman connected at 19:06 to give the home team a 3-2 lead. Clarkson however, came right back.

The Knights won the ensuing faceoff and got the puck deep in the Canisius end. Sexton took a pass from Marsh in the corner and was able to jam in a wraparound shot just 26 seconds later to make it a 3-3 game with 28.7 second still on the clock. McPherson also assisted for his second helper of the game and team-high sixth assist of the season.

Canisius held a 5-4 shot advantage in the five-minute overtime session.
