Potsdam, NY - Sophomore starter Bryan Chudy (Goshen, NY) delivered the Clarkson University Baseball team's second consecutive shutout in the opener of Sunday's doubleheader against Union College, but the Knights bats were nearly silenced in the nightcap as the two teams split a doubleheader, Clarkson winning the first 15-0 but dropping the second 9-2 at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights moved to 13-7 overall and 9-3 in the Liberty League, ending a three-game winning streak. Union pushed its record to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in conference games. Clarkson will take a week off from conference competition sitting in first place.

Clarkson started off the opener with two runs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead, and with Chudy on the mound that appeared to be more than enough. In the first, David Kinney (Mexico, NY) hit a one-out single and Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY) followed with a double to send Kinney home. Coleman then came around on a wild pitch. In the second, Coleman tripled in another pair of runs.

Chudy was dominant from the beginning, getting three groundballs in the first and three more in the second. He then struck out the next four hitters he faced before giving up a soft single. Over the course of seven innings, he allowed just three hits, with only one actually leaving the infield in the air. He didn't walk any or hit a batter, but struck out seven, including the last batter of the game.

It would take some time before Chudy could get to that final frame, as Clarkson added a run in the fifth and sixth inning for a 6-0 lead, but tacked on nine in the top of the seventh inning on just five hits. Union's bullpen struggled in the last inning, allowing the Knights to win by a wider margin than expected.

Clarkson's top four hitters each had two hits, with Coleman driving in three runs. David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) and Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) each had two hits with a pair of RBIs, while Kinney and Sam Grainger (Bedford, MA) aldo delivered two hits.

Game two looked like it would mirror the first game as Clarkson scored runs in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead. However, Union would take care of several Golden Knights' miscues in the bottom of the fourth to claim its first lead of the day, tallying three times. It would be something that the Dutchmen would continue to do, as they tacked on two in the sixth and four more in the eighth inning, producing runs thanks to five Clarkson errors. Dane Flavin went 3-for-4 with three runs and a pair of RBIs in the second game to lead the Dutchmen's attack. Union starter Phil Kemp settled down after a tough start and finished off a complete-game victory, going nine innings and allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
