A big second period offensively staked St. Lawrence to a 4-0 lead, but the Saints had to kill off ten Quinnipiac power plays and hold on through a three-goal third period rally for a key 4-3 win over the Bobcats in an ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena Friday night..

The Saints won their third straight, swept the season series with the Bobcats and climbed into a three-way tie for seventh in the ECAC standings, just a point behind Quinnipiac with five games left in the regular season. SLU is now 11-15-3 overall and 7-9-1 in league play while Quinnipiac drops to 14-10-5 overall and 6-7-4 in league play. It was the first home league win for the Saints since a Nov. 19 4-3 decision over Harvard and the Saints will be out to try for four in a row when they host Princeton Saturday at 4 p.m.

Greg Carey scored two goals, his seventh and eighth in the last nine games, but the big story of the game was the penalty kill which held the Bobcats, who came into the game scoring at a 19.3 clip, scoreless despite 18:53 of power play time and 16 shots on goal with the man advantage.

"The guys did a great job on the kill and Matt Weninger made some key saves when they had the man advantage. I thought Jeremy Wick was particularly effective on the kill and really gave us a boost when we needed it," said associate head coach Mike Hurlbut. "We did what we had to do to win and I thought we did a good job against them in the extra attacker situation at the end of the game."

Carey opened the scoring with the game's first goal at 13:59 of the first as his shot along the ice ticked off a Bobcat defender's skate and eluded Quinnipiac starting goalie Dan Clarke. It was Carey's 10th of the year and seventh in his last nine games.

Defenseman Justin Baker and Pete Child scored just 35 seconds apart to start the second period, chasing Clarke and giving the Saints a 3-0 lead. Baker scored his first of the season on a wrister from the left faceoff circle off an assist by Casey at 1:14 and Child picked up his own rebound off a blocked shot and snapped a shot inside the right post for his second of the year at 1:49. Carey scored what proved to be the game winner with his 11th of the season on a rebound at 11:36 of the second as he put the puck between the pads of Bobcat backup goalie Eric Hartzell and the right post.

Quinnipiac, which went scoreless in ten power play chances despite generating 16 shots on 18:53 of man advantage, finally got one past Saint goalie Matt Weninger as Jeremy Langlois skated down the slot and snapped a wrist shot which Weninger got a piece of with his stick, but couldn't keep out of the net. It was the 15th of the year for the Quinnipiac center and came at the 8:37 mark of the third.

Spencer Heichman scored his sixth after a faceoff win in the Saint end at 13:41 to make it a 4-2 game and the Bobcats pulled Hartzell for an extra attacker and the teams skating four-on-four and cashed in when Connor Jones scored his seventh on a feed from behind the net by Loren Barron at 16:30.

Quinnipiac pulled Hartzell again with 1:11 to play but couldn't come up with the equalizer, getting just two shots through to Weninger as the Saints held on for the win. Weninger finished with 32 saves while Clarke and Hartzell combined for 12 for the Bobcats.
