Brown subdues Saints 5-1

Freshmen Mark Hourihan and Garnet Hathaway each scored one goal and assisted on another as Brown University skated to a 5-1 ECAC Hockey victory at St. Lawrence on Saturday night, gaining a split of its weekend North Country series.

St. Lawrence, which upended second ranked Yale on Friday night, struggled to regain the same zip and smoothness it had on Friday and had to settle for the weekend split. The Saints will host North Country rival Clarkson in a big game Tuesday in the middle of a five-game home stand

Brown, which swept the season series from the Saints, improves to 8-12-4 overall and 6-10-1 in the ECAC, two points in front of SLU, which is now 9-15-5, 5-11-1.

Brown scored just 46 seconds into the game and used the early goal as a springboard to a dominating first period. While Brown had just a 15-11 edge in shots on goal, the Bears had a territorial advantage and took a 2-0 lead through the first 20 minutes

"We didn't have a good night, but you have to give Brown a ton of credit, they bounced back from last night and came out flying," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "They are a team which has always given us trouble and they really came to play tonight. We just have to put this one behind us and get ready for a big effort on Tuesday against Clarkson."

Brown outshot the Saints 36-34 for the game, but many of the St. Lawrence shots were from long distance while the Bears worked the puck well down low and created quality scoring chances between the faceoff circles.

Senior center David Brownschidle opened the scoring when he picked up a rebound after a save by Saint goalie Robby Moss on a two-on-one Brown break to make it 1-0 at the 46 second mark and the Bears took a 2-0 lead when sophomore wing Chris Zaires scored his fifth of the year off a faceoff in the Saint zone. Jack Maclellan won the draw for Brown and Harry Zolnierczyk got the puck to Zaires who cut to the crease and tucked the puck past Moss at 15:09.

The Bears increased their lead to 3-0 just 2:14 into the second period when freshman wing Mark Hourihan stole the puck along the sideboards at his own blue line and raced into the Saint zone, snapping off a shot which deflected off the stick of a Saint defender and under the crossbar for his first collegiate goal. It went to 4-0 just under two minutes later when freshman Garnet Hathaway scored his fifth of the year, taking a rebound of a shot by Jarred Smith and putting it back past Moss at 4:02

Saint captain Aaron Bogosian cut the Brown lead to 4-1 at 3:41 of the third period when he took a pass from sophomore Kyle Flanagan and put the puck between goalie Mark Clemente and the post for his 11th of the year, but the Bears got that one back when defenseman Jeff Buvinov picked up a rebound in the short slot and put his fourth of the season just under the crossbar against Saint backup goalie Matt Weninger.

Clemente made 33 saves for his sixth win of the season while Moss had 21 and Weninger finished with 10 for the Saints.
