POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team (3-3-2, 0-2 SUNYAC) dropped a 2-1 decision at Oswego State (7-3-0, 1-2-0) on Friday afternoon. Ashley Thayer scored for the Bears and goalkeeper Katrina Rowland made eight saves.
The Lakers took control of the play early, outshooting Potsdam 8-0 in the first half. However, the Bears defense and Rowland kept Oswego off the board until the 42nd minute. At 41:17, Laker forward Nikki Liadka finished a pass from forward Shelly Bateman and Oswego took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Lakers continued to press offensively in the second half and Bateman scored the eventual game-winner in the 70th minute. Despite the 2-0 lead Oswego never let up, posting an 11-1 shot advantage in the second half. With less than three minutes to go, the Bears earned a corner kick and Heather Johnson launched a cross into the box. After bouncing off several bodies in front of the net, Thayer drove the loose ball home to cut the lead to 2-1. The Bears were unable to net the equalizer in the final 2:18.
Laker goalie Emily Varonier allowed Potsdam’s only goal and finished without a save.
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. when they travel to Cortland to face the Red Dragons.
