CASTLETON, Vt.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (5-7-1) got goals from sophomore forwards Jenn Crawford and Jessica Silveira for a 2-1 non-conference road victory at Castleton State (6-6) on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore goaltender Dawna Salvarinas made 25 saves for the win.

Potsdam dominated the first period, outshooting the Spartans 18-4. Despite the pressure Castleton goalie Paula Stephens kept the Bears off the board until the final 17 seconds of the period. Freshman forward Izzy Fayerman and junior forward Katie Komsa set up Crawford at the 19:43 mark and Potsdam took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The Spartans evened out the play in the second period, finally getting some offensive chances on Salvarinas. At 8:23, Jade Werger knotted the score at 1-1 with assists from BriAnna Narodowy and Eileen Coyne. Castleton sustained the pressure and Potsdam Head Coach Jay Green called a timeout to stop the momentum change. The Spartans didn’t score again.

Castleton outshot the Bears 9-6 in the third period, but Salvarinas shut them down. Finally at the 11:59 mark, Silveira notched the game-winner on assists from senior defenseman Breanna Roy and junior forward Brittany Westlake. The Spartans pulled Stephens with 58 seconds remaining, but couldn’t change the outcome.

Stephens finished with 30 saves. The Bears were 0-4 on the power play and Castleton went 0-6.

“We got a strong effort from everyone tonight,” said Green. “We started strong and were able to stay ahead of them in the final two periods. Brandi Atwell was very strong for us on defense and Breanna Roy and Katie Komsa played well offensively.

Potsdam returns to ECAC West play this weekend when they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons on Jan. 13-14. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.
