POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team will participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s Play 4 Kay event on Friday, Feb. 10, in a 6 p.m. home game against Plattsburgh.

The event, hosted by the Bears and many other college teams nationally, will take place from Feb. 10-20, to raise money and awareness for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Fund, which partners with the V Foundation, is committed to raising money for scientific research in order to fight women’s cancers.

The athletic department will sell pink t-shirts for $10 each at the main gym entrance for both the women’s and men’s contests. All proceeds from the games’ ticket and t-shirt sales will go to the Kay Yow Fund. Both games will also feature a 50/50 raffle and fans can enter a halftime shootout with prizes for a $1 donation.

“We’re excited to participate in this event for a good cause,” said Bears Head Coach Tara Ruckh. “We hope it will bring out a good crowd to raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.”

The late Kay Yow, former NC State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for Play 4 Kay after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and passed away on January 24, 2009. Overall, the Play 4 Kay initiative has raised over $4.5 million since 2006.
