Bears women’s basketball downed at Cortland

The SUNY Potsdam women’s basketball team was unable to find its offensive rhythm Saturday, falling 75-40 at SUNY Cortland in a State University of New York Athletic Conference affair at Cortland, N.Y.

The Bears (2-11 overall, 1-5 SUNYAC) shot just 27.8 percent from the field, compared to 45.5 percent for the Red Dragons. Senior captain Brittany Whitton (DeKalb, N.Y.) led Potsdam with 10 points and two steals.

After a put-back layup by sophomore Adedoyin Akingba (Brooklyn, N.Y.) brought the Bears to within 19-16 with 9:42 left in the first half, Cortland (10-2, 5-1) quickly posted a 16-2 run to take a 35-18 lead at the 4:30 mark.

The Red Dragons took a 41-21 advantage into the locker room and extended the margin in the second half. Potsdam shot just 18.8 percent after the break.

Senior captain Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle, N.Y.) contributed with four assists and four steals for the Bears, who had 11 different players score in the contest. Akingba grabbed five rebounds, including three offensive, and junior Sophie Parks (Bogart, Ga.) finished with a team-high six rebounds.

Potsdam resumes conference action this Friday, Jan. 21, against Buffalo St. Game time at Maxcy Hall’s Jerry Welsh Gymnasium is slated for 6 p.m.
