CORTLAND, N.Y.—The 10th ranked Cortland Red Dragons (29-5, 12-0 SUNYAC) swept the SUNY Potsdam softball team (11-19, 2-12) in a Friday afternoon doubleheader by identical 8-0 scores. Cortland pitcher Lindsay Rowell no-hit the Bears in game one and two Red Dragon pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the second contest.

In game one, Rowell needed five innings to no-hit the Bears over five innings. After keeping the Red Dragons off the board in the first, Cortland scored one in the second, three in the third, one in fourth and walked off with three in the fifth. Freshman shortstop Sami Brown reached base twice on a walk and was hit by a pitch, but came out of the game shortly after. Senior pitcher Brittany Pawlowski (3-5) was tagged for the loss. She allowed five runs, four earned, in 3 1/3 innings, striking out three and walking four. Sophomore Megan Johnson went the final inning and two thirds, allowing three runs, only one earned, and walking and striking out one.

Sophomore Heather Johnson wasted no time for Potsdam in the second contest. The centerfielder led off with a single and quickly stole second before being stranded. The Red Dragons answered in the bottom of the first with two runs and added a third run in the third. The Bears threatened in the top of the fourth. With Pawlowski on third and sophomore third baseman Molly McCuin on first with two outs, Cortland starting pitcher Abby Martin rebounded with a strikeout to end the threat. In the bottom of the fourth, the Red Dragons put the game away five runs. Four of the runs came on a Meaghan Kohler grand slam to dead center field. Cortland reliever Morgan Kuhn allowed a single to Megan Johnson in the top of the fifth, but retired the other three Bears to earn the save.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Thayer fell to 7-10, allowing five earned runs over three innings, striking out four and walking three. Senior Katie Nawrot retired all three hitters she faced in the final inning.

The Bears continue their road trip tomorrow when they head to Oswego for a noon doubleheader with the Lakers.
