The SUNY Potsdam softball team put itself in position for a sweep Saturday, but came away with back-to-back losses against Brockport in a State University of New York Athletic Conference doubleheader at Brockport, N.Y.

Potsdam fell in the final at-bat of a 2-1 loss in nine innings in Game 1 before suffering a 6-4 defeat in the nightcap. The Bears (9-20 overall, 0-13 SUNYAC) have now lost 10 conference games by three runs or less.

In the opener, Potsdam got a go-ahead home run from junior Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore, N.Y.), her first of the season, in the top of the ninth.

However, the Golden Eagles (19-9, 5-5) loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom half of the inning after a single, an error and a fielder’s choice. Freshman pitcher Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) retired the next two hitters on pop-ups before Brockport’s Emily Dumas singled to left field, bringing in the tying and game-winning runs.

For the second straight game, Thayer (5-7) took the loss without allowing a single earned run. She scattered five hits with no walks and struck out three in 8 2/3 innings.

Grebinger and sophomore Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) finished with two hits apiece for the Bears. Thayer added one hit.

Potsdam jumped out to a two-run lead thanks to a two-run homer by Perry, her team-leading seventh of the year, in the top of the first. Brockport answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead for good with two more in the second frame.

Junior Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) took her fourth loss of the season, pitching the first two innings. Junior Meaghan Patterson (Malone, N.Y.) and Thayer each tossed two innings in relief.

Seven Bears finished with at least one hit in the game, including senior Susie Garrett (Queens Village, N.Y.), who reached base in all four of her plate appearances. Senior Allison Breivogel (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored twice and knocked in one run.

Potsdam returns to play this Wednesday, April 27, at SUNY Canton. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Canton, N.Y.
