POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam softball team was unable to get the bats going on Saturday, falling 9-0 in five innings against Fredonia State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference affair at Maxcy Hall softball field.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended in the bottom of the second inning due to rain with Fredonia leading 3-0. No make-up date to complete the contest has been scheduled.

The Bears (7-16 overall, 0-9 SUNYAC) were held hitless in the completed game by Fredonia’s Ashley LaPorta, who walked two and hit a batter while striking out five.

The Blue Devils (19-6, 7-4) tallied five times in the first inning and scored at least one run in the first four frames. Junior pitcher Katie Nawrot (Buffalo, N.Y.) fell to 0-3 with the loss, scattering seven hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings. Junior Meaghan Patterson (Malone, N.Y.) pitched the last 2 1/3, allowing just one earned run.

Junior Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore, N.Y.) reached base twice, while sophomore Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.) reached on a walk and dropped down a sacrifice bunt.

Potsdam returns to non-conference play on Tuesday with a home doubleheader against North Country rival St. Lawrence at 3 p.m.
