PITTSBURGH, Pa.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (9-13-2, 5-11-1 ECAC West) ended a three-game winless streak with a 2-1 road win at Chatham (0-17, 0-17) on Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) and junior forward Caitlin Manahan (St. Albans, Vt./Elmira College) each scored for the Bears, while freshman goaltender Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) made 25 saves to earn the win.

After a scoreless first period, Lewis made the most of a short-handed opportunity with her team-leading 11 goal at the 5:13 mark of the second period. Junior defenseman Breanna Roy (Orleans, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats) recorded the assist on the goal. The Cougars evened the score on goal by Sydney Williams 12 minutes later. The game remained tied heading into the second intermission despite multiple chances and a 32-17 shot advantage by the Bears at that point.

Manahan got her 10th goal of the season and the contest’s final tally at 4:54 of the third period. Salvarinas cemented the win with nine third period saves.

Potsdam outshot Chatham 40-24 on the afternoon. Cougar goaltender Kaitlynn Smith finished with 38 saves. Both teams went 0-4 on the power play.

Bears Head Coach Jay Green was pleased with the win, but admitted his team missed a few opportunities.

“Overall, it was a strong collective effort by everyone,” said Green. “We played hard and controlled the game territorially and in scoring chances. We just didn’t get the breaks that should have given us some more offense. We hit some posts and missed some empty nets so I think we could have gotten a few more.”

The win ties Potsdam’s single-season mark with nine. The Bears will try to win their 10th victory of the season tomorrow afternoon when they close out the 2010-11 campaign with another shot at Chatham at 1:30 p.m.
