The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team earned an impressive 17-7 victory over Potsdam State on Tuesday evening under the lights at Hall-Leet Stadium in Canton, NY.  Junior Margie Bailey scored a game-high five goals, while senior Kim Cooper added four goals and an assist to give Saints' head coach Jodi Canfield her 100th career victory.

St. Lawrence (2-3) finished with a 37-18 advantage in shots and scooped up 23 ground balls to Potsdam's 18.  The Bears (2-3) were led by Carly Richards, Maribeth Simmons and Lizzy Penree, who each scored a pair of goals in the loss.

"I thought we passed the ball the best we have thus far this season, which led to solid scoring chances," said Coach Canfield.  "Margie and Kim had really impressive showings on the offensive end, while Anna (Marchand) made some key stops early to give us momentum."

Marchand closed with eight saves in the game, including a few from point-blank range.  Kaci Milligan suffered the loss in net for Potsdam State after making six stops in 39:14, while Jen Chmiel made three saves in relief.

St. Lawrence scored the first three goals of the contest behind tallies from seniors Kaitlyn Fahsel and Kim Morse and junior Alanna Piroli.  After Simmons cut the lead to 3-1 for the Bears, the Saints ran off five of the next six goals to take an 8-2 lead into intermission.  Bailey and Cooper scored consecutive goals for a 5-1 lead, while Cooper and senior Kim Morse (2) gave the home team all of the momentum up 8-2.

Bailey started the second half in style with two player-down goals only 58 seconds apart to push the Saints advantage to 10-2 less than 3:00 minutes into the period.  Junior Kendal Harty and Cooper continued to pile on the offense for the Scarlet and Brown, which took a 10-goal lead at 12-2 with 24:38 remaining.

The two teams exchanged goals throughout the second half until the Saints put the game out of reach with three straight tallies from Piroli, Cooper and Bailey in a span of 4:06 to open up a 17-5 lead.  Richards and Penree capped the game's scoring with goals in the final 2:30 of regulation.

Piroli had another solid game, finishing with two goals and a team-high three assists.  Senior Kelsey Redpath (2), Cooper and Fahsel also had assists in the win on Tuesday.

St. Lawrence will hit the road for four straight games, beginning Saturday, March 26 when the Saints square off with Brockport State in Brockport, NY at 2:00pm.
