AKWESASNE -- The Akwesasne Warriors defended their home ice and pole position, defeating the 1000 Islands Privateers 5-1 in Federal Hockey League action Friday night.
The win ended Akwesasne’s three-game losing streak and 1000 Islands’ four-game winning streak.
The Warriors came out looking to end a two-game slide against the Privateers and converted an early power play as Ahmed Mahfouz scored.
Pierre Dagenais tallied in the first and second periods, while Martin Beaulne put one inside the crossbar before the second intermission.
Addison Pelkey lit the lamp in the third, while Tyler Fernandez scored his ninth of the year with a wrist-shot past David Plouffe. Mike Byrd and Clay McFadden drew the assists.
Plouffe was superb tonight, stopping 40 of 41 shots and making many dramatic saves, be it a flash of the pad or the flip of his glove. Rich Sillery got his second start and was impressive, making 41 saves on 46 shots. The issue tonight was quality of chances, as Akwesasne’s defense prevented the rebound opportunities the Privateers use to capitalize.
Akwesasne used their second chances to blast the puck past Sillery. The two will face each other Sunday at 2 p.m.
