DWI charge in Potsdam during traffiic stop

POTSDAM -- Bret F. Bates, 31, of Branch, La., was charged early Friday with driving while intoxicated and other offenses during a traffic stop by Potsdam police at 2:12 a.m. along Cedar Street.

Police said a patrol saw the vehicle turn from Market Street to Main Street without signaling. The vehicle then traveled along eastbound on Main Street in the oncoming lane.

At the stop on Cedar Street, Bates was asked to perform a standard field sobriety test, which police said he failed.

Bates was transported back to the Potsdam Police Department for processing and testing. The test showed a blood alcohol level of .12%. It was also found that he held a suspended and expired driver's license.

He was issued tickets for improper or unsafe turn without signal, failure to keep right, unlicensed operator, and DWI.
