Where do tax increases end for Norwood?

To the Editor:

I hope everyone is keeping track of the possible tax increases being placed in front of us. One tax increase has all ready taken effect.

Last May the voters of NNCS district approved a budget with over a 5% tax increase. Because New York State failed to announce that they were putting less money towards the STAR program, my actual September school tax bill went up 15.4 % for 2011-12.

If the Village of Potsdam votes to dissolve, I am looking at another increase in my Village/Town tax of over $400 annually.

If St. Lawrence County votes to over-ride the 2 % N.Y.S. property tax cap to a 9.5% tax increase, my County tax will increase about $80.

Now I have to decide if I want to support our local Norwood library with a new $72 annual tax.

If all of these proposals pass, I am looking at having my taxes raised $672 in one year for just local taxes. These tax increases give me no additional services. There will be services cut by these taxing agencies.

My tax increases would modest compared to many other local taxpayers. I live in a 1.5 story wood framed home built in 1917. I would hate to think what other taxpayers are facing who live in bigger, newer homes.

Let’s not forget that food costs have increased 35% already this year.

I hope other people are adding up these additional costs.
