Questions about pot legalization

Posted

To the Editor:

Once again some stoner takes to the Sound Off column ("Alcohol Far Worse Than Pot" online, Monday April 4) to promote pot as less harmful and a better alternative to alcohol. I have a few questions for the pot heads who promote these ideas. If we legalize pot how do we:

Measure the level of intoxication on the stoned driver who runs over a kid near the play ground? How much pot did he/she smoke? Are they a true pot addict (and yes, people do become addicted to this “harmless” drug) or did they just have a “couple of tokes” before they got behind the wheel?

Can you smoke dope without getting high? Isn’t that the purpose of smoking it? I can enjoy a glass of wine or beer or even a Manhattan because it tastes good and yet not get intoxicated. But has someone recently developed pot that allows you to stay sober after smoking it and that doesn’t smell or taste like road kill or make the user stink like sasquatch breath?

Ensure the safety, quality and growing conditions that “Buddy” uses to harvest his pot on the back forty? Does he use pesticides or is it organic pot? Does he mix in a little timothy to stretch his supply?

Keep it out of kids’ hands? The government controls the sale and distribution of alcohol and cigarettes pretty closely, so how big of a government bureaucracy will we need to make sure Little Timmy isn’t buying his “nickel bag” on the corner?

Make up for the lost work production and safety risks that Stoner Jim causes at his dangerous industrial job?

These are the questions that I came up with in about five minutes at my keyboard. Can the Sound Off Stoner answer them or has he/she even thought about some of these issues before joining the Pro-Pot Lobby that pops up from time to time on these pages or in other publications?

I didn’t think so.

Must be they’re too busy watching the gyrations of their Lava Lamps or the latest episode of Scooby Doo on the Cartoon Network.
