Opinion: Vote Hewlett for Town of Brasher Highway Superintendent

To the Editor:

I am writing in support of Larry Hewlett for Town of Brasher Highway Superintendent.

Larry submits a detailed budget to the board and has lowered the highway tax rate over the last six years. Through the budget process, Larry has developed a five-year plan in conjunction with Town Board approval to update and or replace heavy highway equipment which spans a 20-year life of a piece of equipment after replacement.

Larry considers when purchasing equipment that used is always an option and has worked in the past. It has been a trend of in the last few years that purchasing new vehicles/equipment on a State or County contract, the Town can save money utilizing grants to lower the cost and is a better fit in the price and warranty that comes with the new piece of equipment.

Since Larry has been Highway Superintendent all paved roads have been re-paved at least once with the available State Aid (CHIPS) funds. There have been five roads added to the paved roads list that were once gravel roads as State Aid (CHIPS) funds allow. It is the plan to pave the remaining gravel roads as funds allow.

It is worth noting that Larry is not responsible nor the Town of Brasher for the Depot Street bridge decision of replacement. In 1977, St. Lawrence County took over ownership by law of the New York State legislation. The County although owners of the Bridge on Depot Street in Helena is inspected by the New York State DOT. New York State DOT Inspectors had deemed the Bridge unsafe to use for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. This bridge when completed will be a new infrastructure of added value to the residents of Brasher and surrounding area.

In emergencies and natural disasters, Larry has a current CDL license to operate Town equipment for the town and any mutual aid from surrounding Towns, Counties, and State municipalities. Larry is responsible for shared services as the Town of Brasher coordinator with the County, State, and surrounding towns.

Larry has been appointed by the Town Board to aid in the custodial responsibility of the sewer and water districts under the NYS Licensed Plant Operator in responding to emergencies and arising issues with each system.

With Town Board approval, Larry supports the multi-use trail system with equipment and material purchased by the local clubs that work to upkeep the trail system.

I would like to recommend Larry to continue to use his experience and knowledge and skills to keep serving the Town of Brasher residents on Nov 2, and would appreciate your vote.
