Opinion: Trump is ineligible for re-election, says Hermon man

To the Editor:

The recent campaign announcement by President Trump for re-election in 2024 will undoubtedly be greeted with much excitement in some circles. For those who believe that President Trump was re-elected in 2020, I can certainly understand how another attempt at the presidency is welcomed.

I sadly regret to inform you, that the former President has rendered himself ineligible to seek another term. No, I am not referring to the numerous legal battles in which he wittingly finds himself embroiled.

I refer instead to the 22nd amendment of our beloved Constitution.

And I quote,

“No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice…”

The importance of this passage should be immediately obvious. If President Trump, as he claims, was in fact elected two times, once in 2016 and once in 2020, he is ineligible to run for a third time.

Personally, I take the man at his word. In his mind, and those of his followers, he was re-elected. I accept that some fervently believe that. I also believe it important to honor the views of my fellow citizens. Unfortunately, as a person sworn to uphold the Constitution, his campaign is effectively over before it has started. Sad.

My condolences. I know how much some wanted it. Tragically our beloved Constitution stands in the way. At least it does if you care at all about the Constitution. The question is, do you?
