Opinion: Town office closure loses community money, says Canton resident

To the Editor:

Why was the Canton Town office closed?

There should be a town officials available to man the office at all times during regular, scheduled business hours.

How much revenue did Canton lose by not being able to issue licenses? The town supervisor was instructing people to go to Walmart to get their hunting licenses.

People were not able to pay cash for the school payments. It is clearly stated in NYS Real Property Tax Law Title 3, Chapter 50-A, Section 924, paragraph 1 “The collecting officer shall receive taxes at the times and places set forth in the notice of receipt of the tax roll and warrant and at any other times place during the period of collection.”

This is not the only time that the office was closed during normal business hours nor is it the only time that the town sent the community elsewhere to purchase licenses. Wy has the Board not established a contingency plan when something like this occurs?

Remember this on election day.
