Opinion: Stefanik will forever be known as supporter of the big lie, says Edward resident

To the Editor:

Elise Stefanik, representative of the 21st Congressional District will forever be remembered for her support of the big lie. We had a free and fair election and her presidential candidate lost. Her continued support of the baseless campaign to cast doubt on the results directly contributed to the insurrection and loss of life on January 6. She could have followed Senator Loeffler’s example and dropped her opposition at the 11th hour, 59th minute but she did not.

Her own lies? That she is bipartisan. Her speech and actions while serving clearly show her contributions to the poison in our politics. I was sickened to see her campaign add “I back the blue “. That statement came out as a not so subtle opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement. The situation with the Potsdam police and the racist incidents in our district are crying for leadership.

Her party controlled all 3 branches of government 4 years ago. Health care? She participated in the weakening of the Affordable Care Act, offering no alternatives. She stood silent while the pandemic task force (started by George W. Bush) was dismantled. Her complicity in savaging the UN, withdrawing from the WHO, and gutting environmental protection while supposedly representing the Adirondack Park is inexcusable.

She has blood on her hands from the events of January 6. She should resign or at least call on President Trump to resign or encourage her Vice President and the cabinet to remove him from office. She should vote for impeachment. At the very least she should acknowledge the legitimacy of Joe Biden’s victory, tone down her rhetoric and work with the opposition to solve the enormous problems facing our country.
