Opinion: Potsdam High School Drama Club officially cancels 'Matilda' production
To the Editor:
It is with a sad heart the Potsdam High School Drama Club has decided to finally cancel their production of Matilda. The students and I had hoped that group restrictions for arts and entertainment would subside enough over the summer that we might be able to perform our show.Although the restrictions at this time would allow us to perform in an outdoor venue it is such a late date that now many of the students involved have other obligations. Some that require them to quarantine before going to college.
There is an enormous amount of time, commitment, and capital that goes into producing a musical each year. This year’s expenditures included the rental of materials and royalty fees ($3,200), payment of the pit orchestra members ($1,700), purchasing of materials, costumes, make-up, set materials and construction ($2,200), and advertising ($700). The money used to pay for the musical production each year is derived and replenished mostly through ticket sales. Not uncommon, this year's expenditures exceeded eight thousand dollars.
If you purchased tickets to see the PCS production of Matilda we will certainly be willing to provide you with a refund however, we would ask that you consider having your ticket purchase be a donation to the Drama Club. The loss of ticket sales this year is going to make future productions more difficult as it will take several years to replenish this loss.
If you would like a refund, please mail your tickets with a self addressed stamped envelope to Potsdam High School Drama Club, 29 Leroy St. Potsdam, NY 13676 by Friday, Aug. 21. Requests postmarked after August 21st will not be processed.
Thank you for your support,
